Candidates' Talking Points
|
| |
7/9/2004 - Dear candidates:
When you talk about discounting anywhere, try using these remarks for maximum effect and GOOD LUCK.
"I'm ___________ and I'm running for the Iowa House, (or Senate), to take you completely off the Iowa income tax rolls. If you are already retired, my goal is to take you OFF the Iowa income tax rolls immediately. If you are still working, my goal is to take you completely OFF the income tax rolls when you do retire."
How does it work, and doesn't the state go broke?
"Actually it's just like discounting at Hy-Vee: The more money you keep, the more the state will have, too."
"If you are still working, you will have the freedom to choose between filing with all your current deductions, or with your new discounted rate at 5.72% of your EARNED income, with all your pension income, Social Security, interest, dividends and capital gains being TAX-FREE. You decide which method is best for you."
"If you are retired and have NO EARNED INCOME, then all your pension income, Social Security, interest, dividends and capital gains will be TAX-FREE here in Iowa."
"If you are still working, you will probably want to continue filing with all your deductions knowing that everything you save and invest will be your's to keep when you do retire."
"So my goal as a candidate is to take you OFF Iowa's income tax rolls immediately, or when you retire. BUT, YOU HAVE TO VOTE FOR ME IN NOVEMBER TO GET YOURSELF OFF THE TAX ROLLS."
"If you're still working, you can save and invest for yourself knowing that everything you put away will be your's to keep, TAX-FREE, when you do retire."
"Discounting your Iowa income taxes works just like discounting at Hy-Vee, or Wal-Mart: you keep more of your money because they discount your prices. But the store makes more money because they attract more customers with their low prices. AND IT WILL BE THE SAME FOR YOU IF YOU ELECT ME IN NOVEMBER ."
"In fact, when you keep more of your money and the government's revenues rise, too, then there will be more money for education, if that's where people want it spent."
"But the most important point is that, if everyone benefits, then everyone should be in favor of this rewarding solution. Would you like a yard sign for your yard? " "Would you like to make a contribution to my campaign?" "Can I count on your vote this November 2nd?"
